feeling so alive in this hopeless dream
Harry Goodsir / Lady Silence (Silna) Playlist
Series: The Terror (season 1)

Prompt / Trope: Unrequited Love / Pining
Collection: Trope Bingo Round 14
Medium: Fanmix + Cover Art
My Card
Notes: I chose this pairing for the unrequited love / pining prompt because I fell so unexpectedly in love with them after watching the series recently, especially after the second viewing. These two struck up an unlikely friendship despite their tragic circumstances as man, creature and nature threatened to tear them apart, but they remained steadfast in their loyalty to each other even when they were doomed never to share words or gazes again.

There's no definitive proof that Goodsir and Lady Silence were in love; then again, does there need to be? It's easy to assume that Goodsir likely pined after Silna after their parting, his dedication toward her is one of the more heartwarming pinpoints of light in this show, and it's almost just as easy to assume that Silna reciprocated his feelings, given her state when she was reunited with Goodsir for the final time. These two for me are the epitome of unrequited: they were never given the time required to explore or act on their feelings, but it does not make those feelings any less real or poignant.

For this playlist, I tried to blend a mix of bleak and hopeful songs. Most of them, for me, are from Goodsir's point of view.
The music is a mix of metal and rock, the former symbolizing the bitter hopelessness of their situation, especially Goodsir's,
and the latter highlighting the fleeting, quiet moments between them, sweet and caring and brave, much like Goodsir himself.

Film: Brothers Grimm (2005)
Song: Lifehouse's 'Sick Cycle Carousel' [Indie/Alternative Rock] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh3fl...)
Program: Shotcut

I love this song by Lifehouse and think that it fit the brothers' love/hate relationship really well. Initially, I meant to revolve the video around Jake, about how he's tried to suppress his beliefs and his imagination for Will's sake, not to mention forever lives in the shadow of his tragic childhood mistake and Will's constant reminder of that pain. But then I realized that it also really fits Will as well, since in the latter half of the film he's really trying to keep up with Jake while his own worldview is being shattered. In fact, Will gives up all rationality and control as he's sucked up into his brother's world, a world that he flat out admits terrifies him because he doesn't understand it (though also because nothing but grief and anger and betrayal has come of Jake's world prior to the events of the film).

So I guess this video really centers around Jake's frustration with living in Will's world, and then finally coming into his own once it's revealed that this other fantastical world isn't just in his head; and then also around Will coming to terms with accepting the past and finding a place in his brother's world and, ultimately, finding peace. It works out great when a song you choose ends up fitting both the characters, highlighting their shared and separate frustrations and disappointments and maybe even regrets. Overall, this movie is about the brothers: their arguments and out of control emotions and overlapping relationships and their sacrifices.

Thanks for watching!

I really love this video and the original song it belongs to (Black English's 'The Long Haul') and I also really love The Gathering's 'Saturnine,' so I wanted to pair the latter song with the video. This video is about a girl making her way alone in the world, and I feel like 'Saturnine' is a perfectly beautiful and fitting match for her solitary journey. The cold and bitter world in the video isn't easy on her, but as Anneke sings 'you don't need to preach / you don't have to love me all the time', it could also be the girl proclaiming to the world that she lives by her own rules and yet the world doesn't have to go easy on her all the time; she's brave enough to face it on her own. Thanks for watching!

immolate_the_silence: Merrill accepting her dark side aka doppelganger, Vampire High (Dark Merrill)
Collection: h/c_bingo (Round 10)
Prompt: First Transformation
Notes: I really love this series and Tom Bateman and just had to make a video about Robert Jekyll's transformation into Hyde. I also wanted to shed a little light on the relationships he has with the other amazing characters, both romantic and as friends and family, and how there are people who genuinely care about Robert. I felt that this instrumental piece really fits Robert's descent into madness and all the emotions that go along with it.

immolate_the_silence: Claire Redfield battling the Axeman in Resident Evil: Afterlife (Red in the Rain)
Collection: Trope Bingo
Prompt: Handcuffed/Bound Together
Notes: I went for more of a 'Chains' theme for this one, sometimes physical though mostly mental. We have themes of physical chains for convicts and as (metaphorical) jewelry, and we also have chains as a symbol of love or life, mainly the former. This is mainly oldies but goodies (folk, new wave, soul), but there's some recent stuff in here too.

You can listen to the playlist HERE.

1. Chains by The Cookies

~Now believe me when I tell you I think you're fine
I'd like to love you but, darling, I'm imprisoned by these chains
My baby's got me locked up in chains
And they ain't the kind that you can see~

In this song, the singer is telling someone that she's already in love with someone else and that she is unavailable to this person; hence, "my baby's got me locked up in chains." It could be that the singer isn't happy about these chains and about being tied down to someone, since they repeatedly keep on about wanting to kiss this person, "your lips look sweet / I'd like to kiss them"; that this person is "fine" and that "I'd like to hold you"; and that her "chains of love won't let me be." Either way, the singer is tied down and there's nothing they can do about it.

Collection: Trope Bingo
Prompt: Haunted House
Notes: Given how much I love music, I thought why not create a playlist for this fun little trope? In the process, I actually found songs by bands I've never heard of or in certain genres that I would normally never listen to and now love. Thanks, Trope Bingo!

Oh, and you can listen to the playlist HERE.

1. Mister Memory by The Comsat Angels

~In the place where you used to be
There's a noisy ghost, a restless space
...
He's a haunted house - Mister Memory
Will you lay the ghost, will you set him free~

Mister Memory is the focus in this song, a haunted house housing a ghost who has lost himself/herself and whom the singer begs the audience to set free. Ok, I've always been terrible on decoding songs, but this song could also be about a person's memories being like a haunted house, trapping them until there's only chaos and noise, and how that person is desperately reaching out for someone to set him/her free. Specifically, someone left the singer and caused them to feel like this shell of a person; therefore, they're begging to be released from loss and torment. Yeah, let's go with that.

Overall: The singer feels like he's trapped in a haunted house, that house being all his bad memories.

Part 2 of 2 - Drabbles & Other ('cause apparently the post or the tag list or something is too large :(

I ended up stuffing 17 stockings for my second year at Fandom Stocking: 10 fics, 4 drabbles, 1 vid rec list, 1 music rec list, and 1 stocking that received both 1 fic and 1 piece of art.

Just like the year prior, it was difficult for me to stick to just drabbles, though I had loads of fun writing everything and even creating the vid rec list. I was able to branch out of my usual SPN fandom again (only 3/13 were SPN), which made me so happy. I was able to write in 4 other fandoms I have written for in previous years (Moonlight, Dark Angel, Z Nation and Hunger Games), and wrote for 5 new fandoms this year (Fantastic Beasts, DC Super Hero Girls, The Magicians, Lost Girl and Mag 7). I was especially ecstatic to write in the Mag 7 fandom (I just found this series this past summer and it has taken over my life).

Speaking of, my Mag 7 stocking stuffers for Mag7 Daybook are HERE.

Again, like last year, I'll thank those I've gifted for allowing me to write what I've written. It was the best Holiday season yet.

Drabbles

Close Call - Z Nation - Roberta, Murphy, Doc – Murphy has a close call.

The Morning After - The Magicians - Q/Eliot/Margo – Eliot and Margo both gave to him and took from him. They hadn’t used him and, with satisfaction, Q knew he hadn’t used them either.

Lead and Follow - Supernatural - demon!Dean/Crowley – Dean and Crowley’s summer escalates into something more.

A Christmas to Remember - Dark Angel - Alec/Max/Original Cindy + Joshua - Alec just wishes Max would stop stealing the cookies.

Fic + Art

Heartaches & Cityscapes - Moonlight - Mick/Josef - The first sip, purer than what he currently had back in his apartment, finally unfroze his tongue. “I haven’t felt the same since you turned me. It’s like I’m having a hard time keeping up with everything, trying to figure out where you fit in my life.”

“And I don’t fit?”

AFTanith,

I just wanted to give you a few band recommendations since I'm obsessed with some of the bands you mentioned and because I'm a huge music person in general.

Chevelle is one of my favorite bands, so I would recommend Taproot first of all (and everything they've put out). All of their albums vary, with the first being the heaviest, so from experience you might want to start with something lighter like Welcome, Blue Sky Research or Our Long Road Home. The Episodes isn't for everyone but is my favorite.

Cold is my next go to and I would start with 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage or the lighter A Different Kind of Pain. Next I will recommend A Perfect Circle (and if you like this band then maybe Ashes Divide), 10 Years (especially The Autumn Effect album), Filter (The Amalgamut album is their best but also the most metal), Trapt (self-titled is my favorite and a good starting point), Staind (I would start with Break the Cycle or even The Illusion of Progress for something lighter), Deftones (Koi No Yokan and Diamond Eyes are really good and I think good starting places), and maybe Sevendust (Black Out the Sun album).

While hopefully you haven't heard of all of those, if you have then you may not have heard of Revis, who only put one CD out (Places for Breathing) but are AMAZING. Armchair Cynics are just as indie as they are, but their small album Killing the Romance is awesome. Crossfade is another one that comes to mind if you like Chevelle, especially their self-titled album.

I'm also into European bands like you are, and if you like Within Temptation and Epica then hopefully you should like some of these: The Gathering (if_then_else, Home, Souvenirs), Tristania (Ashes) and Sirenia (An Elixir for Existence or The 13th Floor). Unsun's two albums The End of Life and Clinic for Dolls are also fantastic. Lacuna Coil (gothic metal for most of their albums, Comalies is my favorite) and Theatre of Tragedy (Storm and Musique) are my personal favorites. And before I forget, if you like Anneke from The Gathering then you should check out her vocal work in The Devin Townsend Project.

Some other band recommendations:

HIM kinda reminds me of My Chemical Romance. The Razorblade Romance album is a great starting point, though they're essentially gothic romance music so they're not for everyone.

Matthew Good Band comes to mind as you brought up Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco, but I wouldn't really compare them. This is a great Canadian band that is one of my favorite bands ever because of their upbeat, feel good music. I would probably start with Beautiful Midnight or Underdogs. Matthew Good also puts out some great solo albums, especially Avalanche, which is pretty indistinguishable from the stuff with his band.

Paradise Lost is one of my favorite bands and has worked in a wide variety of genres: gothic metal, doom metal, death metal and even alternative metal/rock. Their alternative metal/rock ones are highly addictive: Believe in Nothing and Symbol of Life for a little more metal. For gothic metal, then their self-titled album is a great starting point.

I really hope you haven't heard of some of these and that one calls out to you.

The Happiest of Holidays!
