feeling so alive in this hopeless dream
Harry Goodsir / Lady Silence (Silna) Playlist
Series: The Terror (season 1)
Prompt / Trope: Unrequited Love / Pining
Collection: Trope Bingo Round 14
Medium: Fanmix + Cover Art
My Card
Notes: I chose this pairing for the unrequited love / pining prompt because I fell so unexpectedly in love with them after watching the series recently, especially after the second viewing. These two struck up an unlikely friendship despite their tragic circumstances as man, creature and nature threatened to tear them apart, but they remained steadfast in their loyalty to each other even when they were doomed never to share words or gazes again.
There's no definitive proof that Goodsir and Lady Silence were in love; then again, does there need to be? It's easy to assume that Goodsir likely pined after Silna after their parting, his dedication toward her is one of the more heartwarming pinpoints of light in this show, and it's almost just as easy to assume that Silna reciprocated his feelings, given her state when she was reunited with Goodsir for the final time. These two for me are the epitome of unrequited: they were never given the time required to explore or act on their feelings, but it does not make those feelings any less real or poignant.
For this playlist, I tried to blend a mix of bleak and hopeful songs. Most of them, for me, are from Goodsir's point of view.
The music is a mix of metal and rock, the former symbolizing the bitter hopelessness of their situation, especially Goodsir's,
and the latter highlighting the fleeting, quiet moments between them, sweet and caring and brave, much like Goodsir himself.

The Inescapable Us by Matthew Good Band
~That's fate / looking our way
Your sparkling spot hasn't caught on
That's fate / stealing away~
This is when Goodsir and Lady Silence first meet, out on the ice, upon her father's accidental death, entirely unexpectedly. It's almost like fate or nature are pushing them together, Goodsir inevitably pulled toward her out of fascination and kindheartedness. They are constantly pulled in different directions but remain true to one another.
The Longest Winter by Paradise Lost
~Feeling so alive in this hopeless dream
We're the ones who pay with honor
Your pain rejected / your holy symbols inane
Your honor remains infected again~
For Goodsir, the winter is endless and inescapable but there is one bright point: Silna. He can learn from her and she from him. He can show her the good of humanity to keep it burning pure in himself. He can hold onto the memory of her even as everything begins to fall apart, including his decency, honor and morality.
AKA by True Widow
~Into the night / until the morning light
Ancient in your way / your faded out escape
You never say a word / that anyone has heard~
This song perfectly encapsulates the bleakness of their friendship/relationship. For me, this leads up to Silna's escape from the men, when she has the power to help with Tuunbaq and Goodsir stands by her despite her refusal to disclose necessary information. They are worlds apart and yet at their heart, actually not.
Bloodstream by Stateless
~Words can be like knives / they can cut you open
And the silence surrounds you / and haunts you
I think I might've inhaled you~
This song reflects Goodsir's growing feelings for Silna. Despite the growing animosity of nearly all the men towards her, there is something that Goodsir trusts and feels like he can confide in. He doesn't care about their language barrier or about her self-inflicted permanent silence, he has inhaled her body and soul, sealing their connection forever.
When the World Explodes by In Flames
~In the darkest of nights / you are my endless fire inside
Across the waters and back to shore
There's space in time / you guide me~
I just wanna play this over the scene where the Carnivale set dissolves into flames and Goodsir holds onto a weak and blood-drained Silna, protecting her. The world is literally exploding around them as the other men begin to go mad, but Goodsir grounds Silna and vice versa. This is also perfect for the later scene where Silna lays down beside Goodsir and lays a hand on his shoulder, trying to comfort him and proving successful in calming his panic attack. The juxtaposition of the male and female singer also works well for Goodsir and Silna's dynamic. He has comforted her and protected her and now she is returning the favor despite being under no obligation to do so. It's nearly too sweet for words, but I feel this song captures both that and the almost epicness of their connection, even as their lives spiral out of their control.
Feather Moon by Vienna Teng
~Dead of night / how bright you glow
Breathe in breathe out / exhale and inhale
Seven sins / god of stone
All is true / down to the bone~
I also pair this with Goodsir's panic attack and Silna drawn to him, perhaps understanding emotions between than she ever could mere words. Their dedication and love for each other couldn't be more apparent than in this scene.
Right Into the Bliss by Katatonia
~So I try to speak this
Without a thought down by a black road
We try to forget and try to make it through~
This leads up to Silna's willing departure, shortly after she has found the bodies of her friends. It would be foolish and dangerous for her to remain with Goodsir, but Goodsir still cannot let her go so easily, battling with the right words to say even though Silna doesn't need them.
Sad Song by End of Green
~Sad about all the things you'll never see
So sad about all, everything, you and me
So sad about all / that feeling never dies
Sad about all the ways I wanna be~
This song gave me the idea of a playlist for Goodsir/Silna. It's a perfect companion for the scene where Goodsir tells Silna that he wishes she could see England, wishes she could see how good men can be, wishes that she could stay with him. He is so desperate for her to know the good in him even though she understands perfectly.
Thousand Mile Wish by Finger Eleven
~Can we stay until we know ourselves / I'm torn as I tell
You're the story that I know and fell from
I'm so far into your story I don't know why
We think we're in control / when we lie between the lines~
The thousands of miles that separate Goodsir from home, the thousands of miles that separate him from Lady Silence. Even after Silna's second departure, their bond has grown so strong that Goodsir is plagued by worry and longing for her.
No Saint by Charon
~And it's all to make you worth of dying
Worth of something like you
We keep falling down like summer rain
Away from winter's bane~
This is Goodsir as he begins to wear away, his honor and his decency, his hope and his spirit. He's been forced to do something that has broken him, yet he has made the ultimate choice to commit that act. He no longer feels worthy and yet he still holds onto his memory of and devotion for Silna.
Iron Moon by Chelsea Wolfe
~My heart is a tomb / my heart is an empty room
I've given it away / I never want to see it again
And all your words could save me / but keep your love away from me
In all the world's decaying / is there a place that's safe for us
Of course, the iron moon epitomizes the men withering away from lead poisoning, including Goodsir, though I also think this song works well with Goodsir's last conversation with Crozier, as he asks his Captain whether he believes Silna is safe and still alive. Crozier reassures him to which Goodsir responds: "Good," in a nearly breathless, utterly relieved voice. He can let go now knowing that Silna will survive, knowing that he has protected her from the men.
Desperate Now by Stabbing Westward
~I keep breaking all the promises
That I keep making to myself
But the promises mean nothing to me anymore~
This is another song for Goodsir wearing away, eager to protect Crozier from Hickey's gang of cannibals. He knows that there is no other way, knows that there's nothing left for him. Desperation to protect those he loves is all that remains.
Voices by Borknagar
~When I finally draw my last breath
I will lay there in the field
When I finally stop to breathe
All the voices / will only linger in the field~
And, at long last, Goodsir's suicide, an honorable one: to protect his Captain, to poison Hickey's murderous gang, to further ensure Silna's safety. One of the side effects of lead poisoning is hearing voices, so it's not so far fetched for Goodsir to have reached this point. He has no options left, no freedom, so he remains courageous to the very end.
Blood of a Broken Man by American Mercury
~No longer a white man / collapsing the you in me
I tell you we're born free / I am your blood, your sea
I dream how you rest now / that's all I know
I dream how you leave now / that's all I know~
I just had to close the playlist with this song, a song which I've been dying to put on a playlist and one that fits Goodsir & Silna so well, and also Goodsir & Crozier and how they were the only two men who had respect for and understood Silna. This is for Silna finding Harry, in the end, and for the undeniable grief written all over her face at what they shared and what was stripped from them. This is for Goodsir's tragic, noble sacrifice and for Silna always keeping him in her heart. This is for the two of them meeting each other again past the constraints of time and life, past the cold and the hopelessness and the suffering, both self-inflicted and forced upon them.
Thank you for listening!
