Notes: In honor of my total guilty pleasure film (and one of my all-time favorites). 20 something images for this comm was a bit of a challenge; then again, there's a lot of variants of the falling trope, both literal and figurative: falling from high spaces, falling under an enchantment, falling unconscious, drowning, not to mention literally falling to pieces, as well as falling apart in an emotional context due to desperation, panic, guilt, grief and stress - all of this falling under the lovely hurt/comfort banner. So here are 26 examples... and I'm sure I missed a few. Title is from Amorphis' House of Sleep.

Title: Her Love is Poison: How True Love Conquers All in The Brothers Grimm
Notes: So I'm playing with this prompt a little. SPOILERS.

Will being under the Mirror Queen's enchantment, forcing him to become her slave, means that he technically is in a fake relationship with her. The Mirror Queen makes it clear to Jake that under her bewitchment, she has claimed Will as her eternal servant and lover, snatching him from the arms of a death she has indirectly caused. She has manipulated Jake into impaling his own brother with a blade she has enchanted; thus, twisting Jake's desperate, albeit true love for Will into something destructive and damning. She is the one with the magic beans now and taunts Jake about this, given his own magic beans from childhood failed to save their sister.

While the relationship between the Mirror Queen and Will isn't consensual on both sides, it has become truth courtesy of the magical broach embedded in Will's heart. It is her third and final step towards claiming Will after the stabbing, with a knife not wielded by her and yet under her control, and after stealing his full attention via the mirror she inhabits and with which she constructs a false reality. With all the odds stacked against him, Jake must fight to break the curse and have his brother returned whole to him. This fake relationship between the Mirror Queen and Will not only threatens the latter's very life but also the lives of Angelika and the young girls, the livelihood of Marbaden and last but certainly not least, the troubled relationship between the brothers.

Although, even when Jake shatters the enchanted mirror and breaks the spell, thus forbidding the Mirror Queen to remain in her new flesh and blood body, Will's continued infatuation for her lingers, her will over his physical heart persisting. This infatuation is fabricated given it becomes entirely unreasonable as Will frantically scoops up pieces of the mirror, or rather, the Mirror Queen herself, desperate to possess them, to possess her. The Mirror Queen's infatuation is also fabricated, given she merely needs Will to kiss her to complete the spell and seal herself inside her beautifully restored form. This trope could be described as the climax of the film given the Mirror Queen first tries to claim Jake, meaning that without one of the brothers, without sealing the spell with a kiss, she is not able to achieve her goals.

As it is, the shattering of the mirror; the breaking of this false, manipulative relationship; the testing of the endurance of Jake's love for Will, which isn't fake in the slightest, all are what give the story a much-needed happy ending.

Will Grimm Appreciation Post (Brothers Grimm, 2005)

(or really, just a shameless, very late birthday post; really, it would have been on time had dreamwidth not given me endless posting issues, but I am stubborn and finally succeeded).

Third time's the charm for this film. I was terrified of it when it first came out, kinda liked it but kinda hated it too when I went back to it years later, and now many years later remembered it, re-watched it and fell head over heels. It's got pretty much everything I could ever want in a film and it's a total guilty pleasure.

Will (and Jake) are plagued by bad luck throughout the film, so here's some happy Will where he's in his element as the perfect, charming showman.

Title: Cages Won't Hold Us: Imprisonment in The Brothers Grimm
Notes:
Imprisonment is a pretty common trope in The Brothers Grimm; in fact, all the characters are imprisoned in one way or another, and usually in various ways and at numerous times over the course of the film. The film deals with both physical and mental forms of imprisonment, opening opportunities for character growth and parallels between the characters themselves. I could realistically have used dozens of images with this prompt, but here are just a few...

Title: Love Triangles & Their Complexities in The Brothers Grimm
Notes:
I'm centering on two love triangles in this film as there are two women who are potential love interests for the brothers, one who selfishly vies for their affections so they can become little more than her love slaves, and the other who is independent enough to seem mostly disinterested in the trivialities of romance. These love triangles are important to the film because they represent both the temptations and animosities the brothers must overcome. They also serve as an obstacle to Will and Jake's familial relationship: the petty jealousies they must shed in order to strengthen their bond as brothers.

Title: Such Brotherly Love: Hurt/Comfort in The Brothers Grimm
Notes:
This film is one of my favorites and the ultimate hurt/comfort film for me. I'm a sucker for brother relationships and I love how Will and Jake's grows throughout the course of the film. Will goes through the greatest character development as he shifts from anger, fear, ridicule and abuse to acceptance, guilt, understanding and love. Ultimately, I chose this film for this prompt because I feel like the hurt/comfort scenes are the epitome of the brothers' tragic and complex relationship, highlight its transformation as the film progresses and also symbolize the inner heart of the film.

Notes: I spent so long on this fill, I can't even... What is it with me and this movie? [Please see below for additional notes on early 19th century German and French currencies.

Okay, so for one thing, it is incredibly difficult to find information on early 19th century (early 1800s) German currency. From my meager research (because I didn't want to spend countless hours searching for information just to make a poster, even though shame on me I am a history nut, plus the Internet sucks by the way on finding any historical information whatsoever pre-World Wars - end rant), I ascertained that pretty much every city in Germany (around 35) had its own currency, given that Germany wasn't a unified nation at this point and therefore, had no uniform currency.

So I looked into potential Kassel or Frankfurt currency, given the Grimm's helpful admission (twice, I believe) that they're from Kassel, which is near Frankfurt. Of course, their concept of near is in reality around 120 miles. Kassel was a city well before the Brothers Grimm made it their home, and was even the capital of the Kingdom of Westphalia during Napoleon's presence in Germany. So, Kassel is located pretty much smack dab in the center of Germany and Frankfurt is a bit to the south and a bit to the west.

With the film set in the early 19th century and under French occupation, the dates would be anywhere from 1806 (close of the Holy Roman Empire and the start of Napoleon's claim over much of that Empire, including what would later become Germany) to 1813.

Now, some potential German currencies for these years:
  • Westphalian Thaler and Westphalian Frank (both of these would have been in the Hesse-Kassel province). An interesting point: the latter is the equivalent of the French franc
  • Gulden (would have been used in Frankfurt)
  • Kronenthaler and Kreuzer (the former was predominately used in the Netherlands and Southern Germany, and the latter predominately in Southern Germany)

It was after this fascinating research that I also wondered whether French currency would be more applicable as a payment for the capture of wanted men. In that case, francs would have been the likely currency.

So there you have it, the brief early 19th century German currency lecture that you never wanted. Not to mention my completely questionable reason for just going with francs as reward money. Oh well.

By the way, if anyone happens to be reading this and knows more about early 19th century German and/or French currency than I do, then by all means please share; I am kinda fascinated by it all now.

Lastly, please check out this lovely little resource for early 19th century French currency:

Film: Brothers Grimm (2005)
Song: Lifehouse's 'Sick Cycle Carousel' [Indie/Alternative Rock] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh3fl...)
Program: Shotcut

I love this song by Lifehouse and think that it fit the brothers' love/hate relationship really well. Initially, I meant to revolve the video around Jake, about how he's tried to suppress his beliefs and his imagination for Will's sake, not to mention forever lives in the shadow of his tragic childhood mistake and Will's constant reminder of that pain. But then I realized that it also really fits Will as well, since in the latter half of the film he's really trying to keep up with Jake while his own worldview is being shattered. In fact, Will gives up all rationality and control as he's sucked up into his brother's world, a world that he flat out admits terrifies him because he doesn't understand it (though also because nothing but grief and anger and betrayal has come of Jake's world prior to the events of the film).

So I guess this video really centers around Jake's frustration with living in Will's world, and then finally coming into his own once it's revealed that this other fantastical world isn't just in his head; and then also around Will coming to terms with accepting the past and finding a place in his brother's world and, ultimately, finding peace. It works out great when a song you choose ends up fitting both the characters, highlighting their shared and separate frustrations and disappointments and maybe even regrets. Overall, this movie is about the brothers: their arguments and out of control emotions and overlapping relationships and their sacrifices.

Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching!!

Jake says Will's name a lot during this film, wouldn't you agree? :D

This is a compilation of every time Jake says his brother's name during the course of the film, with some extras thrown in like a few of Will's quips. I've kept a lot of full sentences of Jake's, so it's a bit more than Jake just saying "Will" the whole time. I couldn't resist making this. I just love Will and Jake's bromance (or perhaps more accurately love/hate relationship) and I especially love how Heath Ledger says "Will": it's only a one-syllable word and he just puts so much love and feeling (and even exasperation and irritation) into his brother's name.

I also am crazy about how distraught he is when Will sacrifices himself, all because Will found it in himself to believe in Jake when it mattered most; it's exactly what gave me the inspiration for this. Love this movie and love these two brothers and love Heath and Matt for being a part of this film.
